Chasing Sunrise at Colonial Beach
Some photographs are carefully planned. Others require a little patience, a little luck, and a willingness to be awake long before most of the world.
The Pier at First Light, Twilight’s Farewell, and Twilight Over Colonial Beach began in the quiet darkness before dawn at Colonial Beach, Virginia. I arrived well before sunrise with one goal in mind: to capture the brief moments when the first rays of sunlight would meet the end of the pier. Those few minutes can transform an ordinary scene into something unforgettable—but only if you're standing in the right place.
The beach was nearly silent. The only sounds were gentle waves on the Potomac River and the occasional call of a seabird somewhere in the distance and the shoreline breeze. Before unpacking my camera, I spent time walking the pier and surrounding boardwalk, looking at how the horizon lined up with the gazebo and checking where the sun would rise using the PhotoPills app (not sponsored). The sun crested the horizon, slipping perfectly between the wooden posts of the gazebo and creating a brilliant starburst of light. Warm golden rays stretched across the pier while the rich colors reflected off the brick walls framing the entrance. For just a fleeting moment, everything aligned: the light, the composition, and the calmness of the morning.
Those are the moments that keep landscape photographers coming back before dawn.
